2007 will mark the 13th anniversary of the Daffodil Planting Program.  This year, native bulbs will also be available to volunteer groups for planting in public areas of San Jose.

The Daffodil Planting Program is one of the enduring programs of San Jose Beautiful. Since 1994, this program has provided 270,000 bulbs free of charge to community groups for beautification of public spaces in San Jose. These bulbs were planted with the help of hundreds of community volunteers. If you have a community group looking for a one-day project in the fall, consider planting bulbs at a park, school, youth center, senior center, or median strip in your neighborhood. It is an opportunity to work together with neighbors and friends to foster community spirit, to beautify your corner of San Jose, and to make a lasting impression on the landscape.

WHAT: San Jose Beautiful provides 30,000 bulbs each year for planting in San Jose's public landscapes. The bulbs are provided free of charge and are for planting by volunteers from the community. In 2006, California native bulbs will be included in addition to daffodils. These native bulbs were common in the oak savannah that once dominated Santa Clara Valley, and they will give San Jose a uniquely Californian look. Like daffodils, these native bulbs are easy to grow, produce beautiful blooms, and require no maintenance after planting.

Who: Any San Jose-based individual or group may request bulbs for beautifying a public space. Among eligible groups are: neighborhood associations, garden clubs, Adopt-a-Park groups, scout troops, school groups, San Jose Conservation Corps, and other volunteer groups.

WHERE: Bulbs must be used to beautify public spaces in the city of San Jose such as city parks, school grounds, libraries, youth centers, senior centers, even median strips. Private property and religious institutions are not eligible. Bulbs will be available for pickup in October from a central San Jose location: Kirk Community Center, 1601 Foxworthy Avenue (just east of Meridian), San Jose, 95118.

WHEN: Requests for bulbs are accepted via this website. Bulbs will be available for pickup on the following Saturdays in October: October 14 and October 21, 2006. Requested bulbs not picked up by 2:00 p.m. on October 21 will be distributed to other groups on a first-come-first-served basis until supplies last. The suggested planting date this year is: November 4, 2006.

How: To request bulbs, click the "Request Bulbs" button on this page, fill out the form, and click the "Submit Request" button. You may also request bulbs by calling (408) 723-1574. Instructions on how to plant the bulbs will be provided at the time of pickup. The bulbs should be planted by late fall. They will grow with the winter rains, and bloom by next spring. They will go dormant during summer and fall, and will return with the winter rains. Once planted, they require no maintenance or care.

FOLLOWUP: Bulb recipients are asked to send photographs of volunteer bulb planting activities, and later in spring, photos of the site with the bulbs in bloom. Chosen photos will be featured on this website.

CONTACT: If you have any questions, email margaret.wagenet@sanjoseca.gov or call (408) 723-1574.
