Volunteer Opportunity

 

San Jose Beautiful Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is the guiding and volunteer force behind a citywide beautification and environmental education program of the City of San Jose.

Personal Commitment

  • Choose at least one subcommittee on which to serve
  • Participate in San Jose Beautiful activities and workshops

  • Maintain regular attendance at monthly meetings

Partnership Commitment

  • Identify and solicit potential project and event sponsors
  • Assist in identifying and recruiting volunteers

Mission Statement

To make San Jose more beautiful through community advocacy, education and empowerment. The Steering Committee is a 30 member Mayor and City Council appointed body.

  • An appointment is for a two year term.
  • Committee members are eligible to be reappointed.
  • Meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 3:30pm - 5:00pm.
  • Meets ten times a year (August and December are recessed).
  • The Steering Committee is the guiding and volunteer force behind a city-wide beautification and environmental education program of the City of San Jose.

Committee Responsibilities

  1. Personal Commitment
    Serve on at least one subcommittee of member's choice. Participate in San Jose Beautiful activities throughout the program year. Attend semi-annual planning workshops and maintain adequate knowledge of programs, events and projects.
  2. Attendance Commitment
    Due to the dynamic nature of the program, regular attendance is necessary to remain adequately informed. Therefore, three consecutive meeting absences without approval by the Steering Committee Chair will be construed as a resignation. Committee members are expected to comply with City policy on commission membership. Any conflict or perceived conflict of interest must be submitted to the Executive Committee for determination.
  3. Partnership Commitment
    Identify and solicit potential project and event sponsors. Assist in identifying and recruiting volunteers through industry, civic, and community contacts.
     

Program Objectives

  • To educate children and adults about the importance of beautifying their community and preserving the earth.
  • To encourage and inspire individual and community groups to advance plans which they can lead, manage and implement with San Jose Beautiful's help.
  • To establish San Jose as city of gardens by creating and enhancing outdoor spaces with gardens and public art that reflect its natural beauty, cultural diversity, and community pride.
  • To communicate the mission, activities and success of San Jose Beautiful to all segments of the community.
  • To obtain commitments in support of San Jose Beautiful's Mission from elected officials, businesses and homeowners groups.
  • To coordinate with and support other city programs and departments related to beautification.
  • To restore adequate funding levels for San Jose Beautiful programs and services.
  • To leverage City funds for beautification with volunteer, non-profit, civic and corporate contributions.
